Pai Gow Poker is played using a 53-card deck, which includes a standard deck plus one wild Joker. Each player receives 7 cards and must divide them into two separate hands. The 5-card hand is called the "highest hand", while the 2-card hand is referred to as the "second highest".
The game follows traditional poker rankings, including pairs, three-of-a-kind, and straights. However, the 5-card hand must always be stronger than the 2-card hand. For example, if a player’s seven cards include Ace + Ace + 9 + 7 + 5 + 4 + 3, the Aces must remain in the 5-card hand rather than being placed in the 2-card hand.
The goal is to defeat both of the dealer’s hands. If the player wins only one of the two hands, the result is a tie (push).
Pai Gow Poker generally follows standard rules, but there are some exceptions. Players cannot act as the dragon or dealer. Additionally, if a player incorrectly arranges their hands into an invalid ("dead") hand, they are given a warning and must simply rearrange the cards rather than losing the bet.
Hand | Description |
---|---|
5 Aces | 4 Aces + the wild card |
Royal Flush | A, K, Q, J, 10 of the same suit. The highest card is the Ace. |
Straight Flush | Five cards of the same suit in numerical order (e.g., 7, 8, 9, 10, J) |
Four of a Kind | (e.g., A, A, A, A, X) |
Full House | Three of a kind plus a pair (e.g., J, J, J, 5, 5) |
Flush | 5 cards of the same suit |
Straight | Five cards of different suits in numerical order (e.g., A, 2, 3, 4, 5) |
Three of a Kind | (e.g., 8, 8, 8, X, X) |
Two Pairs | (e.g., 6, 6, 9, 9, X) |
One Pair | (e.g., 10, 10, X, X, X) |
High Card | If neither of the above hands can be created from your dealt cards, you will compete against the dealer's hand with your highest card. |
Note: The ranking system in Pai Gow Poker differs from standard poker. The highest straight is A-K-Q-J-10, followed by A-2-3-4-5 as the second-highest straight, then K-Q-J-10-9.
In a traditional casino setting, it is crucial to avoid creating a "dead hand". This happens when a Pai Gow Poker player improperly arranges their seven cards, failing to separate them into a higher 5-card hand and a lower 2-card hand. If a player mistakenly places their two strongest cards in the 2-card hand, the hand is considered dead, leading to an instant loss. However, in online casinos, if an incorrect arrangement is made, the game will provide a notification, allowing the player to adjust their hands instead of losing immediately.
The wild card (Joker) can be used only as a single Ace or to complete a straight, flush, or straight flush.
The 5-card hand must always be stronger than the 2-card hand. Players should aim to form the best possible 5-card combination using their seven dealt cards. In Pai Gow Poker, the highest-ranking hand is Five Aces (four Aces plus the wild card).
The 2-card hand is known as the "second highest". The strongest possible 2-card hand is a pair of Aces. If no pair is formed, the ranking of the hand is determined by the highest-value card.
When both the player and dealer have identical hands, this is called a "copy hand". Unlike in Blackjack, where a tie results in a push, in Pai Gow, the dealer wins all copy hands.
In traditional brick-and-mortar casinos, Pai Gow players have the option to take on the dragon role. The dragon position rotates clockwise around the table, allowing one player at a time to act in this extra role. If no player wishes to take the dragon, it is simply skipped. However, in this casino, the dragon option is not available.
In live casino settings, a Pai Gow player can take on the role of the dealer, provided they can cover all bets placed at the table. In this version of Pai Gow Poker, however, the option to become the dealer has been removed.
The minimum bet in Pai Gow Poker is $1.00, while the maximum bet is $100.00.
