How To Play American Blackjack

American Blackjack follows standard blackjack rules where the goal is to beat the dealer by getting as close to 21 as possible without exceeding it. Follow these steps:

• Place Your Bet – Choose a chip denomination and place your bet.
• Receive Your Cards – The dealer will deal two cards to you and themselves.
• Decide Your Move – Choose to hit, stand, double down, or take insurance if the dealer shows an Ace.
• Win or Lose – The dealer reveals their hand, and the winner is determined.

Betting Limits

The minimum wager in Blackjack is $1.00, and the maximum wager is $100.00.

Player Options

Split

If your initial two cards have identical values, you have the option to divide them into two distinct hands by placing an additional bet equal to your original wager. Afterward, you continue drawing cards as per the game rules. However, when splitting a pair of Aces, each hand receives only one extra card. If one of these split hands reaches a total of 21, it does not qualify as Blackjack but is simply counted as 21.

Double Down

If you receive two cards and believe that drawing one more will improve your chances of surpassing the dealer’s hand, you have the option to double down. This move requires you to place an additional bet equal to your original wager. Once activated, you can take only a single extra card. However, doubling down is permitted exclusively when your hand totals either 10 or 11.

Insurance

In Blackjack, insurance acts as a separate wager that allows you to safeguard your bet if you suspect the dealer might have Blackjack. If the dealer’s face-up card is an Ace, there is a reasonable probability that their hidden card has a value of 10, potentially forming Blackjack. If you anticipate this, you can purchase insurance at a cost of half your original stake. Should the dealer reveal Blackjack, your insurance bet pays out at a 2 to 1 ratio, matching your initial wager. However, if the dealer does not have Blackjack, the insurance bet is forfeited. Your main wager is then resolved by comparing your hand with the dealer’s. If both you and the dealer have Blackjack, the round ends in a tie, known as a push.

Rules for the dealer

The dealer is required to keep drawing cards until their hand reaches at least 17. If they have a soft 17 (an Ace valued at 11), they are still required to take another card. A dealer holding 16 must also draw an additional card. Unlike the player, the dealer has no discretion over whether to take a card based on the opponent’s hand; they must strictly follow these predetermined rules.

Basic Blackjack Strategy

Here is a basic guideline for when to stand, hit, split, or double.

Hit or Stand?

* An Ace may be counted as either 1 or 11. A soft hand is when an Ace is valued as 11, such as Ace + 6 (soft 17). The Ace's value can switch to 1 if needed to avoid busting. A hand where the Ace is 1 is known as a hard hand.

Split

If the dealer’s face-up card is 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7, split if you have 2s, 3s, 8s, or Aces.
If the dealer’s face-up card is 8, 9, 10, face card, or Ace, split only 8s and Aces.

Double

If your starting hand equals 11, double unless the dealer has an Ace.
If your starting hand equals 10, double unless the dealer has a 10, face card, or Ace.
